Apprenticeship Communications & Marketing Coordinator

The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation (TGCALF), AFL-CIO, a coalition of 92 unions and their 59,000 union members in the Houston region, seeks to hire an Apprenticeship Communications and Marketing Coordinator to start immediately. The Coordinator will provide communications and marketing support for nine joint labor-management training programs in construction and accreditation of two new apprenticeship opportunities in Houston’s public transportation and live entertainment industries. This work will be funded by a two-year contract with Harris County from ARPA funds, with a good chance of renewal for two additional years.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Digital Marketing

  • Work with apprenticeship program managers, county community engagement staff, and partners to plan digital marketing strategy to increase awareness of union apprenticeships among Harris County residents, particularly women, people of color, and residents from traditionally marginalized communities

  • Design, establish, and maintain a central website, social media channels, and an email list for a central hub with details about the application process, requirements, and easy links to program websites, along with an application platform that connects to a shared database

  • Maintain website, social media, and email list with regular, informative content

  • Work with TGCALF staff and consultants to design branding for the central hub that defines our programs for potential applicants as engaging and exciting

  • Ensure recruitment goals for apprenticeship programs are met by establishing a digital pipeline of qualified applicants accessible to all program managers in a searchable database

  • Support the maintenance of shared calendar with application dates, outreach activities, and all other relevant activities in coordination with Apprenticeship Outreach and Retention Coordinator

  • Design and produce digital assets in coordination with Apprenticeship Outreach and Retention Coordinator and digital consultants

  • Work with Outreach and Retention Coordinator and digital consultants to effectively target digital ads based on equity priorities established by Harris County

Media Outreach

  • Create list of apprentices, leaders and contractors available to speak with media, at schools and at partner events

  • Provide media training to apprentices, leaders, and contractors in coordination with apprenticeship program managers and TGCALF staff

  • Engage media with weekly pitches to increase coverage of apprenticeships in local press

  • Schedule one-on-ones with reporters and informational events for local press to improve local coverage

    Direct Mail

  • Work with direct mail consultants to design, produce, and deliver informative mailers to Harris County residents based on equity priorities established by Harris County

    Community Partnerships

  • Work with Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator to design, produce and distribute digital and physical promotional materials to partners

Other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to the goals of the labor movement, including the creation of good jobs, expanding the role of union apprenticeships in workforce development, and increased access to training pipelines for underrepresented communities

  • Team player with ability to manage relationships in complex political and sensitive organizational situations

  • Previous experience with government, nonprofit, or union digital marketing and communications

  • A strong understanding of current social media trends and up-to-date digital marketing best practices

  • Previous experience working with consultants on creative projects

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete several projects on time simultaneously, with attention to details

  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, including ability to plan, facilitate, and make presentations to meetings with individuals at all levels of management and responsibility

  • Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable vehicle

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual Spanish skills

  • Proficiency in Photoshop, InDesign and other design tools

  • Proficiency in video editing

  • Proficiency in web design

  • Previous experience with media outreach and an understanding of how to engage reporters effectively

COMPENSATION

  • Base salary $52,000-$65,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits include high quality, employer-paid medical, eye, and dental insurance; generous paid time off benefits; workplace flexibility; 10% employer contribution to retirement plan on top of base pay; and option of voluntary contributions to 401(k) plan.
